Project Bikes

We know this page occasionally gets stale, but there's a reason. Bob's generally so busy that he simply works at acquiring future project bikes 8 months of the year and sets them aside. Then in early to mid fall Bob will spend several days re-inspecting, photographing, documenting and writing up a fresh batch for all you do-it-yourselfers to drool over. Well, that time is fast approaching and Bob says he'll be doing just that after he returns at the end of October from a Scouting Tour with Edelweiss Bike Travel in Japan. So stay tuned and be one of the first to inspect the next batch of 8-12 Project grade BMW's! To see project bikes that have sold the past year, click here.

If you're the type who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty, our Project Bikes are a great value. Put a little sweat equity into one of these pre-owned "diamonds in the rough" and you'll not only earn a nice return on your investment, you'll get a great ride too! 1983 R65LS
STOCK #: 370395
COLOR: Black (not original)
MILEAGE: 14,757 (claimed original but can’t confirm)
ACCESSORIES & OPTIONS: It sports a rare German Police gas tank, BUB mufflers, stainless steel brake lines and Koni shocks. Cylinder guards and BMW saddlebag mounts are included but not installed.
COSMETIC CONDITION: better than average with some assorted flecks and less than perfect prep paint blems throughout, a small tear in the side of the seat and just a few bits of hardware or some alloy pieces that show exposure the largest part needing to be replaced is the gas cap that is simply broken. The gauges appear finer and all signals, lights and horn operate as well as the odometer reset. Fork seals look great as do both discs and it even has stainless brake lines.
MECHANICAL CONDITION: The engine turns freely, gearbox goes through all gear easily, carbs are off & disassembled but look complete and fine --- we can see that one diaphragm is bad. Front brakes still feel decent, tires appear to have seen less than 500 miles since new in 2005, battery still had life on 05-13-10 to crank strong but we are not charging it regularly.
NOTES: The most important fact we can share is that the title matches the engine, not the frame. This indicates the bike was crashed at one time and was rebuilt with another straight R65LS frame; it’s factory stamped as such. To place it into legal, titled and tagged ownership and placed most all states would inspect it and provide you with reconstructed title showing both numbers. This will be your responsibility to undertake. You might have other ideas about how to go about this or just think it’s a deal as a spare parts bike since everything looks good. It will be sold with a bill of sale and the title it came into us with. This is the 2nd “project bike” we purchased from this customer whose health began to fail and suspect he just gave up finishing anything. We believe that with a full carb rebuild, fresh fluids and some TLC it would appear that one would have a running R65LS in non-stock. Two sets of new BMW brake pads and what looks like a complete front master cylinder rebuild kit is also included. These parts can not be guaranteed. BMW saddlebag mounts The smart person who buys this bike will have a great looking, head turning classic BMW to enjoy for many years of riding pleasure if it all comes to be as we suspect it will.

$2,495

1998 F650 Funduro

STOCK #: A16367
COLOR: Police White (original)
MILEAGE: 32,908
ACCESSORIES & OPTIONS: The bike’s loaded! Supertrap Stainless Exhaust, Throttlemeister Cruise, Shortened Adjustable levers, Tall tinted screen, Crash guards with highway pegs, Biturbo shock, Pelican rear box, chain guard, hand guards and BMW factory lowering kit plus a beautiful Sargent seat recover. BMW fork boots, Aeroflow head light protector and a Touratech bash plate to protect your enghine. BMW accessory outlet, stock tool kit and original owners manual.
COSMETIC CONDITION: Very good everywhere and should shine up even more. Rims, spokes, paint, hardware, screen, etc all look well cared for. There are a few scratches and a small scrape on the plastic hand guard but it’s really clean.
MECHANICAL CONDITION: The bike starts right up, shifts, steers, brakes and does everything it should do. It is due for a full service and should see some new tires but they have enough tread to ride for while if you are of that mindset. The right side of the handlebar looks ever so slightly bent but many may not have noticed this if we did not bring it to your attention. Front & rear discs look good and so does the sprocket and chain but it is in need of adjusting.
NOTES: For not much time and energy and a set of tires and the stuff needed to change the fluids and maybe do a minor tune up this should be out on the road the same weekend you take it home. It came in with most but not all service records that we can show you. A BIG BONUS is that it also comes with the 2 DVD Service manual and a Clymer Repair Manual to make it easy to work on and care for. This era F650 were built to be around for the long haul and back in the day Bob’s had a loner fleet of 6 of them that all saw a lot more miles in 5 years than this bike has seen in 12. We think it’s a great value!

1991 K100RS

STOCK #: 493125
COLOR: Classic Black Metallic
MILEAGE: 39, 874
ACCESSORIES & OPTIONS: Lowered seat with BMW lock parts and a Corbin seat, Bob’s wrist rest, 4-way flashers, fuel and temperature gauges, Aftermarket rear shock with remote reservoir, stainless steel brake lines all around, Haynes repair manual, Hepco & Becker luggage rack and bag mounts with full size saddlebags, owners manual, partial tool kit and spare bulb set and a Luftmeister complete exhaust with slip on muffler. Partial (painted part) Parrabellem tall windscreen and BMW K75C handlebars that offer a little rise.
COSMETIC CONDITION: Good but there are some assorted scratches on the gas tank and fairing. There is a very small crack in the fairing that’s almost hidden by the right mirror and a few more on the same side lower panel. There is some hardware that shows surface rust but it’s probably less than $25 worth of nuts, bolts and drain plugs. The seat is a two tone grey and black and in decent shape. MECHANICAL CONDITION: The tires are not new but have some miles left in them yet. The bike started right up and runs fine. It shifts smoothly and stops fast but at the time of this writing the ABS light remained on. That indicates either a fault that needs to be cleared, a battery healthy enough to start the bike but not operate ABS or an actual problem.
NOTES: If we get the fault cleared because it was just a low battery or simple non use issue the NEW price will reflect that upgrade in value offered up. The price shown right now is for an AS IS sale. Besides that and the few cosmetic issues it looks like it needs a full annual service and some serious TLC with a wash bucket and some wax.

OFFERED AT: $2,395 (if ABS comes alive we expect to ask $2,895)

1987 K100RS

STOCK #: 043482
COLOR: Pearl White Metallic w/motorsport stripes
MILEAGE: 85,313
ACCESSORIES & OPTIONS: Parabellum windscreen set, new Corbin seat w/motorsport trim insert, BMW saddlebags and mounts, BMW 22 liter trunk, BMW temperature gauge and VDO voltmeter, Progressive shocks and springs, bungee mates on all 3 bags, Kathy’s saddlebag liners, Enamel Motorsport emblems on tank and rear seat cowling, clear knee area paint protectors, fork boots. There is also has a beautiful STAINTUNE stainless steel muffler that looks almost new.
COSMETIC CONDITION: Very good to excellent all around. There is a small scrape on the outer edge of both mirrors and a few minor scuffs or scratches on the bag lids as is very common. There is some wear on the rear luggage rack as is also quite normal when the trunk is installed. All castings, hardware, wheels, screen, switches, gauges, etc are all very well cared for. The bike had either two owners and all treated it with great respect.
MECHANICAL CONDITION: This bike was owned by a very regular client at Bob’s for many years and we know it got regular service. The battery remains strong and we’ve kept it on a charger but we don’t know how long it will last. The tires, while not new have a lot of life and tread left. It starts up, runs, shifts, stops and does everything just as it should. Speedo replaced at approximately 17K, sticker under the seat with details. The clutch feels very strong. The technicians noted a possible rear main seal leak but the belly pan is totally dry and clean since arrival several months ago. All 3 brake discs are below MD Inspection specs and should be replaced but they work fine. It’s probably time for fresh fluids and the head bearings should be adjusted.
NOTES: This bike is gorgeous and it’s loaded with all the desirable accessories. It will make someone very happy as it just does not need much to be placed into regular service to be enjoyed for a long time.

OFFERED AT: $3,295

1983 R80RT
1983 BMW R80RTStock Number: 173204
Mileage:
Color: Red Metallic
Accessories & Options: BMW Touring Cases, Luftmeister Trunk, Reynolds bag mounts and folding luggage rack that allows the seat to fully open. Tool tray, tire pump and one spare BMW oil filter. No tool kit is included.
Cosmetic Condition: Average. The bike shows some very minor storage nicks, dings and a few scratches. It appears to have fallen over on the right side and has a small scrape on the fairing edge, valve cover and the trunk but it’s not bad and the fairing does NOT have any visible cracks. There is only the smallest level of rust on hardware and bolts. There is some typical paint fade most visible on the tank and the pin stripes have worn through from regular washing and waxing although it’s clearly been a while since thoroughly cleaned. Mirrors are original, the left one is cracked. The original windscreen is serviceable but has some scratches that may or may not polish out with a little effort.
Mechanical Condition: This machine came in not running but the seller swears that the mileage is original and that while it’s not been run in several years it ran excellent. His words, not ours and his life changed and he stopped riding. We put it in gear and with the rear wheel the engine and trans turned over easily. The throttle turns fine but the choke cable seems stuck and may just be the 2 into 1 connector under the tank; a common issue. The front master cylinder will need rebuilding or replacing. Clutch lever resistance and action feel strong. The carbs do have some minor residue in the bowls and there is some old fuel still in the gas tank and a tiny bit of coating degradation along the hump over the main frame but the rest looks clean. We have one key and it fits and works everything. There is no key for the saddlebags but they are available and one key for the trunk is included. These machines all had rear drum brakes so there should be no issue here. Most rubber is in good condition. The tires look like they should easily pass inspection; the front has more tread than rear; Metzeler ME33 front and ME99 rear. Wheels and front discs look fine and appear to have plenty of meat.
Notes: A weekend’s effort plus battery, fluids, fork seals, carb and the master cylinder issue should do it. Those parts should cost around $600 so sweat equity could earn you a decent touring machine in the $3000 range when completed.

1975 R60/6

1975 BMW R60/6STOCK #: 940741
COLOR: Blue (2 shades)
MILEAGE: 14,000 plus (see notes below)
ACCESSORIES & OPTIONS: Krauser Cylinder Guards, Black Bar end mirrors,
COSMETIC CONDITION: Slightly below average. The bike has a /7 series gas tank in original paint with a decent dent below the right side tank logo several inches in diameter plus a very small one to the rear of the same logo. There are assorted scratches. The seat is also a stock /7 model to fit with the tank. The fenders and side covers do not match and the paint is NOT original. Most rubber is old but serviceable. A home built seat lift of kit is installed and the front side seat trim is missing. Headers and the cylinders were painted black and there are simple clamps on the headers were they meet the crossover pipe. The instrument cover has a medium crack near the handlebars.
MECHANICAL CONDITION: This bike arrived with a very weak battery but we were able to get it started; the battery has totally died since then. It spins free and the carbs and fuel tank look clean enough to fire up again with a new battery and fresh fuel. Exhaust is serviceable, shocks are iffy but original. Tires are a set of Metzeler ME88 rear and ME33 front and barely show any wear, the front still has mold nubs. Fork seals do not appear to be leaking. Both wheels look straight with very little corrosion and the brake disc shows almost no wear.
NOTES: The engine was swapped out as the number (4925122) does not match the main frame. It should be a 1977 R60/7 and this was very common as these motors were cheap enough (750’s and 900’s commanded the big money) that a swap was less costly than a rebuild, etc. While not stock there’s nothing we see that could not have this bike up and safely on the road for an overall fluid change, new battery and a few adjustments. There is what appears to be a new left side control switch installed and it has the rare black knob switch for the ignition. No seat lock at all and no key for the tank lock, tool kit, etc are included.

OFFERED AT: $1,495

1991 BMW K1
Classic Black Metallic • 10,157 miles
stock number 365526
$5,795

A nice one owner bike that hasn't been ridden much and needs a good detailing and service. The K1 was produced by BMW from 1989 to 1993 resulting in only 6,918* units produced worldwide. In 1989 the new K1 featured ABS brakes and a 4 valve cylinder head and new fuel injection to extract all the potential power form the water-cooled inline 4. We just gave this bike a full detail, renewed the front master cylinder, installed a new 4-way hazard, new battery, and it passed Maryland State Inspection. Why is it a project bike? Well it hasn't been ridden much in it's ownership and needs a few thing. Firstly, the clear coat on the lower side panels and a few other areas has given up the ghost, many areas look great but from 10 feet it's hard to see the deteriorating clear coat. Also, it has a rear main seal weep and will likely need a re-seal. Right now the clutch does not slip and it's not actively leaking but it will need to be done at some point. In the process it also could use a bi-annual service and a fresh set of rubber which while they pass are old. It could also use a steering head bearing adjustment. It does feature a very nice and expensive Ohlins rear shock. This is a solid low mileage bike priced right that you can tag and ride today.

Dear Ashton,
I thought I'd take a minute and thank you and everyone involved for handling the transaction so efficiently and professionally. Over the course of my life I've dealt with many people in the motorcycle sales/service industry, and Bob's BMW is definitely above them all.

I hated to sell that bike, but I know you'll find it a good home. Best for a successful riding season.

Yours truly,
Steve Rouzer

1985 K100RS with Pichler Fairing
Stock Number: 042079
Mileage: 249,146 showing on odometer (it may have a few more in total)
Color: Original Classic black metallic & black gelcoat on fairing,
Accessories & Options: Pichler fairing, bmw bag mounts & rack, saddlebags & 22 liter truck, trailer hitch, corbin seat & a rare Randolph gas tank which may or may not be sold with the bike, original tank available and on the way to us (no photos at this time, Telefix fork brace
Cosmetic Condition: poor is what an honest description would stat
Mechanical Condition: it does not run, has no battery & we’ve not tried to start it. The original engine was yanked and sold for parts and this is claimed to be of 1991 vintage with about 100,000 miles on it, the gearbox was also swapped out and has even fewer miles but we DO NOT have documentation to prove this true. There are a pair of Metzeler marathon tires with about 90% of their tread but they are not brand new or probably recent. The brakes all still seem to work and it rolls around and appears perfectly straight and we do not have any information that it was ever crashed. The brake discs all look like they have life left in them.
Notes: We do know this bike was at one time loved, well cared for, regularly serviced and showed up at most BMWMOA rallies between 1985 and 2001. It was often seen pulling a small camping trailer. It’s been of the road since 2003. We’re sure the bike could run again with some TLC, a full service, battery and lots of small bits or it would be an incredible special project or parts bike. The Randolph Tank may be worth more than the bike by itself and thus is offered separately.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS SALE OF THE MOTORCYCLE AND THE RANDOLPH TANK WILL BE HANDED OVER TO THE PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION

Offered at: Call and make us one on the full package or the bike without the Randolph Gas Tank. We think the bike with stock gas tank including the stuff inside in whatever condition it’s in should be worth about $1400. You may also make an offer on that tank as well although we already have a few people that are interested in it. It may or may not fit other year and model BMW’s and that research and confirmation is your responsibility!

1990 K75S one owner bike
Stock Number: 015229
Color: Blue
Mileage: 121,061 (odometer shows 110,463)
Accessories & Options: bar backs, Parrabellum fairing/tall screen, BMW luggage rack, BMW saddlebag mounts, tool kit, full fork boots, BMW fuel and temperature gauges installed in fairing sides, progressive fork springs and a updated rear stock BMW shock. Three keys included.
Cosmetic Condition: good especially considering the age & miles, but there are some areas where paint is wearing thin and it’s possible that a long time ago a few panels may have been repainted. There’s no current indication the bike was crashed or dropped and all alloy, hardware, wheels, etc look very good. Wheels actually look perfect and most original black driveline parts look excellent as well, but the fork legs show their age as most do being exposed to all the road debris right up front.
Mechanical Condition: It starts and runs perfectly, shifts amazingly smooth and stops fine. We performed a load test on the clutch as it is original and it is not showing ANY SIGNS of slippage. All the switches work, the gauges indicate what they should and the horn is not stock and a bit weak but works. The rear disc looks like it is well below spec and the fronts are probably close to needing replacement but the wear is very even; with fresh pads they’d probably stop even better. Both tires are serviceable, but the rear is a little flat in the middle and the front has lots of tread. Only the right hand grip shows any real wear and most all other rubber items look quite fresh. This bike ran good enough and looked clean enough that we were going to do some work and sell it as a good used bike but alas we’ve really missed our window of opportunity on this one so it’s up for grabs. The entire exhaust system is exceptionally clean, tight and sounds great-no rattles.
Notes: Bob can personally tell you he’s known the owner and this bike since new although Bob’s did not sell it because it was purchased a year before Bob’s became a dealership in 1991. The owner treated it well and never raced it or rode it on the aggressive side. It’s either been serviced by Morton’s BMW or Bob’s in it’s entire history combined with assorted care, oil changes and efforts by a very caring adult owner who now has a newer machine. This bike did have a Hannigan sidecar attached for some period of time and the belly pan is included with the sale but is not attached as the sidecar mounts got in the way. As the original Corbin seat was tired, Bob’s placed a very fresh stock seat on it but there are no hinges as they got lost in the swap. For fans of the K75 this bike should deliver a few hundred thousand more miles for a few parts and some very minor TLC: we think it’s a great value.

Offered at: $2,795

1994 R1100RS
1994 R1100RSStock Number: 310385
Color: Red
Mileage: 42,829
Accessories & Options: ABS, 4-way flasher, spare cables, tool kit w/tire repair kit (inside), spare bulb, helmet lock, wrist rest, tinted Aeroflow windscreen, fender extension and BMW saddlebags
Cosmetic Condition: underneath all the filth of sitting for 6 years there lies a very clean original paint job. We gave it a very light bath just to confirm we were right. No dings, dents or scratches to note except a small impression from a tip over on the right valve cover and a missing rear right signal lens (not related). There’s a very few small spots of rust where it looks like the passengers boots rubbed paint off the frame
Mechanical Condition: bad tires, sidestand lock out switch bad, small final drive leak (inner seal?), ABS down the road is unknown as it’s been off the road a long time but it works fine now after several rides, the fuel low level light DNF. We installed a new battery & fuel pump & related strainer, hoses, wires, etc, flushed tank and it starts, runs and stops perfectly fine.
Notes: This bike was sold new at Bob’s and for the first ten years was lovingly cared for, ridden and maintained by Bob’s and the owner. Health issues caused its lack of use for the next 5 years. With a set of fresh tires and fluids plus a serious detailing job we suspect that this bike has several more decades and tens of thousands of miles left to be gleaned from it’s very solid and young heart.

Offered at: $3,995
